Boat bumpers have a simple job; protect your boat when it’s tied up at the dock. To do that, a fender needs to be tall enough to sit between the dock and the boat, and needs to offer enough diameter to keep the boat safely away from the dock. Other aspects that are important are ease of adjustment, a non-marring finish, and bonus points for a round design that will “roll” with the boat as it moves back-and-forth.

Protecting your boat when it’s tied up to the dock is the primary function of a fender, so you want to be sure that it does its job.
